Dump Cake -- A Worley Reunion Favorite

Here we are, at the 2010 Worley Reunion in Minnesota. And instead of posting about the reunion, I am going to post about "Dump Cake"! It is a real hit with all of us. We usually serve it when it is our turn to cook dinner. But this year -- Devon requested we make it Monday night so that her friend Elle could have some before she had to go home.

In order that the whole family could have the recipe, I decided to post it! I meant to do this last year. So, better late than never!

Dump cake is very easy to make. You don't have to mix anything! So easy that KIDS can make it!
It turns out something like a cobbler.

First step, spread a 20 ounce can of crushed pineapple on the bottom of a 9 X 13 inch pan. On top of that, use a spoon to put globs of a 21 ounce can of canned cherry pie filling and then spread evenly. It should look like this:
Next, "dump" (I actually sprinkle it and then spread it evenly with the back of a spoon) a 18.25 ounce box of yellow cake mix on top of the fruit, and spread evenly. It should look like this:
The last step is the most fun! Cut up pats of butter and place on top of the cake mix. Recipes vary as to using one stick or two sticks of butter. Whatever suits you! If using gluten free cake mix, I recommend two sticks for sure. It should look like this:
Don't think I was quite through with the butter pats when I took this! There are folks who sprinkle nuts on the top. My family is not crazy about nuts, so I omit this step.

Now, bake at 350 degrees for one hour. When you take it out of the oven, it looks like this:
Now, to eat it -- it is better served warm, but still good if it is not warm. My favorite way -- put some vanilla ice cream in a bowl and then put dump cake on top! It is soooo good! It makes about 10-12 servings. We have also made this substituting blueberry pie filling -- yum!-- and also substituting apple pie filling -- also yum!

Recipe:
1 (20 ounce) can crushed pineapple, undrained.
1 (21 ounce) can pie filling
1 (18.25 ounce) box Yellow Cake Mix
1 or 2 sticks of butter (not margarine)
1/4 cup chopped nuts -- optional.

Gluten Free - substitute Gluten Free cake mix. Read the directions for the cake mix. Ours called for adding 3 cups sugar. Mix that in before you sprinkle the cake mix. To me, that sounds like an awful lot of sugar! I would probably use 2 cups next time I make it. You want a cake mix that is for a two layer cake. Two sticks of butter is better. When re-warming, we added some butter on the top before we warmed it in the microwave.

For our reunion, we made one with cherry pie filling and one with blueberry pie filling. The gluten free dump cake was make with the cherry pie filling.

There are about 35 of us up here. It did not last long!

And people should eat and drink
and enjoy the fruits of their labor,
for these are gifts from God.
