Judi and Mike Get Married!
Do you know what you were doing 42 years ago around 4:30 p.m.? Well, I do! Mike and I were about to be married. It's kind of funny, that the guy I laughed at when he tried to kiss me the first time, is the guy I ended up with for 42 whole years! But that's another story.
We were two college kids trying to pick a date that didn't interfere with classes. We got married on a Saturday, honeymooned in Dallas on Sunday and Monday, and went back to classes on Tuesday. Not like how weddings are done in this day.
Mike and I picked the Presbyterian Seminary Chapel, right on the edge of campus, for the wedding. It reminded me of my childhood in England. And a bit of a chapel or two in the Air Force.
Most girls have their wedding all planned out in advance, or so I hear. I never did. Our wedding was very simple. The chapel was decorated enough by itself. We just added candles -- which we forgot to light until the pictures after the ceremony. Pictures? Well, there weren't that many taken. I'm going to share the best ones. The reception was at the Officer's Club. The hardest thing I did to prepare was pick out my dress and the bridesmaid dresses. They took my dress in 3 times and threatened me that it would not fit if I lost anymore weight. I wish someone had to threaten me to not lose any more weight now!
My mother was absolutely beautiful that day! This is my favorite picture with her.
Mike chose his twin brother Pat for his best man. Here they are:
Mike and his groomsmen. A fine looking bunch!:
Judi and her bridesmaids. We picked those dresses, because, of course, they could wear them again! What were we thinking? My beautiful sister is standing to my left:
Here we go down the aisle. First Mike's mom, then my mom, then me and my dad -- in his dress uniform.
I had arranged two roses in my bouquet. One for my mother, on the way down the aisle, and one for Mike's mother, on our way out of the church. Do I look a little focused here? We walk down the aisle, and my dad stops where my mother is sitting. I totally forgot about the flower, looked at him like he was crazy for stopping! He actually had to say something to me to make me remember the flower! You know, talking between his smiling mouth so Mother would not know I had forgotten! This was supposed to be a surprise for her. She was surprised! Apparently so was I!
A shot of us coming back down the aisle after the wedding. Can you see all those unlit candles?

Pictures afterward were very simple. One shot of us with the minister, one shot of us together, and one shot of the entire wedding party. Looking back, the one shot of the entire wedding party is the only picture we have of Mike's Dad on that special day!
Looking back, I don't think our photographer was very good. But then, that may have been the way it was done back then. This little garden outside the seminary is no longer there. We do go back and visit the chapel sometimes when we are in Austin.
The reception was held at the Officers' Club on Bergstrom AFB. Heavy appetizers. I have more pictures than this, but not many more. I just selected my favorites. First favorite - the cutting of the cake! If you look closely at Mike's right hand, that's his wedding ring on his right hand. He broke his left hand a few weeks before the wedding. He had just come out of the cast before the wedding, and his hand was too swollen to put on his ring!
Considering how limited my pictures were, I am so glad we managed to get a picture of me with my maternal grandmother, Lida Hensley. She was the only grandparent I really knew. She gave me my first Bible, which I still have.
Next, the garter fun!
All in all, a wonderful day to remember! I will leave you with the picture of Mike and I right after the wedding.
"The LORD makes me very happy; all that I am rejoices in my God.
He has covered me with clothes of salvation,
And wrapped me with a coat of goodness,
Like a bridegroom dressed for his wedding,
Like a bride dressed in jewels."
Isaiah 61:10
